After exiting the 2024 World Grand Prix without winning a single leg, Michael van Gerwen once again demonstrated his high level of play at Players Championship 27. In the final, Van Gerwen secured his second Pro Tour title by defeating Gerwyn Price.
The final of Players Championship 27 featured two players eager for redemption. Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price had a tough time in the World Grand Prix, getting knocked out in the first and second rounds, respectively. However, in Players Championship 27, both players showed significantly better form.
On his way to the final, Gerwyn Price defeated players such as Ryan Searle and Damon Heta. Van Gerwen, on the other hand, had a very challenging path, facing several highly ranked players including Luke Woodhouse, James Wade, Scott Williams, and Jonny Clayton. However, it was the semifinal against Wessel Nijman that generated the most excitement leading up to the match. The young Dutchman Nijman had made it to the final of the PDC Youth Championship and faced van Gerwen in the Hungarian Darts Trophy final just a month ago. Just like then, van Gerwen emerged victorious.
In the final against Gerwyn Price, van Gerwen capitalized on Price’s mistakes and secured the win with an 8-4 scoreline. It was an especially tough loss for Price, as not only did he miss out on his first Pro Tour title of the season, but he also lost the opportunity to secure a place in the Grand Slam of Darts, which he could have claimed with a win.
The most notable moment from the tournament, however, was when the usually composed Nathan Aspinall completely lost his cool against Madars Razma. With the score tied at 4-4 and Aspinall in a position to close out the leg, he missed his second dart and, in frustration, threw his third dart hard at the board, causing it to fly off. Aspinall immediately had to apologize to both the referee and Razma, and he went on to lose the match 6-4.
